Expert training, built around you

Start strong with our eight-week training programme to become a Functional Assessor. Structured, supportive, and designed to help you thrive.

We know this is a big step

Leaving a frontline role to start something completely new isn’t easy. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed, but at Advo, you’re never expected to figure it all out alone.

Whether you’re coming from nursing, physio, or another healthcare background, we’ll help you apply your existing skills, grow your confidence, and succeed in your new role.

Our training, explained by the people who know it best

Watch Fiona, one of Advo’s Clinical Performance Leads, share what makes our training programme different, and how we support you every step of the way.

Your journey: Stage by stage

A clear journey, real practice, and supportive mentoring, all designed to help you grow in confidence at every stage.

Stage 1 - Induction

Stage 1 is your induction day, where you’ll meet the team and get set up with your equipment. New starters in the East will attend in Canterbury, and colleagues in the West in Plymouth, where you’ll learn more about Advo, our systems, and the support around you.

Stage 2 - Foundation training

Stage 2 is a five-week structured training programme led by experienced clinical trainers. This includes live sessions, group discussions, e-learning, role-play, and written case work to help you apply what you’ve learned.

Stage 3 - Mentored practice

Stage 3 typically lasts 1–2 weeks, depending on the contract (PIP or WCA). You’ll begin working with real claimants, carrying out live assessments with a mentor on the call. You’ll also start moving into a hybrid routine, including time in an assessment centre.

Stage 4 - Guided independence

Stage 4 is where you’ll start working independently, with ongoing reviews and feedback. You’ll need passable reports and strong communication skills to progress to stage 5, which includes three final assessments across a mix of case types.

Every transition has ups and downs

This is a career change, not just a new job. It takes time to settle in, and that’s built into how we train and support you.

Fiona reflects on her own experiences and shares what helped her during challenging moments.

"Training is intense, but incredibly well structured and very supportive. The trainers are always available throughout the day, either via Teams chat or Teams video, which is really reassuring."
